First Disability Law for Cambodians

ADD International, a UK based international development agency working in Africa and Asia, celebrated the news of the first Disability Law in Cambodia.
On May 29th 2009, 12 years since its inception, the law protecting and promoting the rights of disabled people in Cambodia was approved by the National Assembly.
ADD Cambodia played an active role, working with and supporting the Cambodian Disabled People’s
Organisation (CDPO), in the development of the law which addresses disabled people’s right to access: public services; education; accessibility; employment and to vote.
Following the announcement of this landmark law a press conference was held. Co-chaired by former ADD Country Director Srey Vanthon and CDPO’s executive director Mr Ngin Saorath more than 100 people attended including HE Sem Sokha, Secretary of State of the Ministry of Social Affairs, Veterans and Youth Rehabilitation. Mr Ngin Saorath said:
“Having this law is what people with all disabilities need. The law will protect and promote our full participation and ensure that disabled people are no longer isolated.”
